Donetsk Oblast Symbolics
An Emblem is a symbol, an official emblem of the oblast, in which its history, characteristics and traditions are depicted.
In the centre of the Donetsk oblast emblem is “Mertsalova Palm”. Historical reference: “Mertsalova Palm” – is a unique blacksmith hand creation from “New Russian society of coal, iron and railed production” of Aleksey Mertsalov, who forged it in 1896 especially for All-Russian exhibition in Nizhniy Novgorod. The Palm was denoted by higher reward on that exhibition. In 1900 “New Russian society” took part in the Worldwide exhibition in Paris. His exhibitory pavilion, to which Mertsalova Palm was included, was acknowledged deserving higher reward – Grand Prize. Nowadays Palm is in Saint-Petersburg Mining Institute.
The main colours of the emblem are the following:
- Gold (field of shield) – the symbol of wealth, fairness and generosity.
- Black (border) – the symbol of interior wealth.
- Blue (palm) – the symbol of beauty and grandeur.
- Green – the symbol of hope, gladness, prosperity and developed farming.
Crown underlines the fact that the emblem is regional. Oak leaves – the symbol of grandeur and reliability. Motto: “Possibility is proved by work” underlines historically formed labor roots of Donbas, its purposefulness in attaining the goal. Collective author of the emblem is an advertising agency – “Cardinal” Firm.
Donetsk Oblast Flag is a symbol that depicts the history and traditions of the region.
Upper blue field with a gold (yellow) sun that rises symbolizes the East of Ukraine.
Lower black field symbolizes the coal, ground, night Azov Sea with the gold (yellow) glimmings.
The author of the flag is Shcherbak Nina Grygorivna (Donetsk city resident).
